Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall: passport reservations and the right entrance

Reserve the exact memorial exhibition with your passport. Distinguish the three entrances, family bookings and document requirements, and allow time for a respectful visit.

Select the exhibition before selecting a route

The name “Nanjing memorial” can hide a meaningful difference. The main institution commemorates victims of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre. It is also distinct from Nanjing Museum, the city's collection museum. Reserving Nanjing Museum does not reserve this memorial, and the two names should not be shortened to the same entry in your day plan.

Within the memorial's booking arrangements, three exhibitions are reserved separately. Its October FAQ explains that the Massacre history exhibition and the wartime-victory and trials exhibition are adjacent near Yunjinlu station, but have different entrances. The Lijixiang former-site exhibition is farther away near Daxinggong. The institution's location and booking FAQ.

For a first visit centred on the Massacre history, secure that reservation before adding another exhibition. A second historical subject can be worthwhile, but it should have its own time and admission. Combining nearby names into an “all three included” claim loses both logistical and historical clarity.

The passport process and the limits of a successful booking

The standing visitor guide names passports among accepted documents, gives a one-to-seven-day advance window and lists release at 08:00. Use the official account 侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆, select 纪念馆预约 and the actual exhibition. Read the passenger and session details before treating the order as complete. Published visitor instructions.

Enter your real passport details in the supported category. Save the accepted confirmation offline and carry the same original passport. A translation app, driver or guide can assist with understanding the Chinese interface, but their message is not your reservation record. Do not give an unverified seller a document scan merely because they claim they can “find extra places.”

The official FAQ says all ordinary availability is released through the official account, with no additional on-site quota when it is full. The visitor guide also says the memorial has not authorized third-party reservation agents. If the date is unavailable, change the date or the day's activity while transport remains adjustable; arriving at the entrance does not create another capacity allocation.

If the passport field or confirmation fails, call +86 25 86612230 with the exhibition, date and exact problem. Asking whether passports are accepted is no longer the key question—the published guide already answers that. Explain the step that is preventing your specific reservation from completing.

A local digital-ID fallback is not a passport replacement

The October FAQ describes a 金陵网证 digital identity route for a successfully reserved visitor who has forgotten a mainland identity card. That is not evidence that a foreign passport can be replaced by the same service. Keep the original accepted document with you rather than relying on a screenshot of its photograph.

The standing guide also limits admission to once on the visit day and describes one reservation per visitor per month. Do not plan to leave for lunch and re-enter as though you held an unlimited day pass. If you want to change the date, read the current order's rules before cancelling, rather than assuming a second booking is assured.

With children, keep the accompanying adult in the same plan

The October FAQ describes a family reservation option, 亲子预约, for relevant exhibitions. It allows up to five people in an order and requires an adult together with a child under 14 for that route. It also links the child's reservation to the adult: cancelling that adult invalidates the linked child booking. The Lijixiang site does not provide that family-booking option.

Choose the permitted option for your actual party and ensure each child's details are accepted. If the accompanying adult changes, resolve the booking rather than keeping a child on a confirmation associated with someone who will not attend. Travel together through the agreed checking procedure instead of splitting the party among queues before admission is settled.

Booking eligibility and an appropriate experience are separate decisions. Before visiting, explain that this is a memorial to people who suffered and died, not a place for playful photographs. Decide how much exhibition material is suitable for your child and where you will pause if they need to stop. A family reservation is not a requirement to complete every room.

For older visitors or someone needing assistance, use the current preferential arrangement only if its conditions apply. Do not assume that an accompanying adult is covered simply because another visitor is eligible for a priority category. The actual reservation should show the people who will enter.

Reach the booked entrance, not merely the memorial district

For the main site, save 南京市水西门大街418号 with the institution name. The standing guide directs metro visitors to Line 2, Yunjinlu station, normally Exit 2 toward Gate 1; holiday or high-flow instructions can redirect the station exit. Follow the current signs and your exhibition's checking point rather than assuming every perimeter gate admits visitors.

The adjacent thematic exhibition has its own approach. If you have both reservations, the October FAQ describes a route after leaving the Massacre exhibition; do not assume that walking through the first exhibition silently checks you into the second. Keep both confirmations ready and follow the signed permitted connection.

If arriving with a driver, identify the booked exhibition and agree a visitor drop-off and return meeting point. Do not navigate to a car park solely because it lies nearest the institution label; a parking area and the accepted entrance solve different tasks. Leave a walking and security margin between arrival and the reservation.

Luggage and a borrowed wheelchair affect your finish time

The visitor guide requires storage of wheeled suitcases, lists CNY 3 per luggage item and asks visitors to collect stored bags by 17:00. Its wheelchair and stroller borrowing instructions list a CNY 500 deposit plus a valid document, with return by 17:00. Confirm the current service point and handling when you need either service; a borrowed aid is not the same transaction as admission.

That return deadline can be earlier than the site's closing time. Plan to retrieve bags or return the aid before it, rather than finishing the last room at 17:30 and finding the service task unresolved. If your passport is needed for both identity checking and the loan, ask staff how the document is handled so you retain a workable entrance plan.

A wheelchair's availability also does not establish access to every part of the memorial. Describe the booked exhibition, approach, thresholds and rest needs to visitor service. A shorter confirmed route can be more useful than a nominal promise to see everything.

Use normal opening hours after the holiday extension ends

The standing guide lists 08:30–17:30, with entry stopping at 16:30, and Monday closure except statutory holidays. The October FAQ's 18:00 closing and 17:00 last entry applied to October 1–7. They should not be carried into a later October visit simply because the FAQ remains visible in search.

Follow the session on your reservation and the selected day's notices. Last entry is not a recommended starting time for an attentive visit: security and the distance through the exhibition still use time. Ceremonies or special operating notices can also alter access without changing the institution's general description.

If your plans change, cancel through the official account before the applicable cutoff. The guide and holiday FAQ describe cancellation limits in differing detail, so this article does not invent a single penalty count from the two texts. Both warn that an unused, uncancelled booking can affect future reservations. Deal with the order when you know you cannot attend, not after a missed slot has become a surprise.

Read the exhibition as evidence and remembrance

Give a document, an object or testimony enough time to understand what it establishes and how the caption explains it. Moving slowly through fewer displays can be more meaningful than taking an image of each one. If using translation, stand where you do not block the display and retain the surrounding context, not only a striking phrase.

The subject can be difficult to engage with. You may pause, shorten the route or leave; completion is not the measure of a respectful visit. A companion can help by agreeing beforehand how to signal a need for a break. Leave space in the rest of the day rather than scheduling a celebratory activity immediately after the last gallery as an unavoidable appointment.

Observe the memorial's photography and conduct instructions. Keep voices and phones quiet, avoid staged or playful pictures in remembrance areas and do not photograph visitors in distress. Interpret the memorial's purpose through its material and explanations rather than using it as a backdrop for your own performance.

If you need help while inside, approach the exhibition service desk or staff. Keep the admission confirmation for administrative questions and use the posted service arrangement for a practical need. For the next cultural visit, the China map keeps distinct destinations separate. This memorial's reservation is not a transferable booking for another Nanjing museum or historical site.
