Useful for: routes poorly served by public transport, several stops or a trip with substantial luggage.
Separate city days from driving days
If your first days are in an area with good public transport, consider collecting the car when you leave the city. Include hotel parking, tolls, fuel and transport after return. Seat count does not guarantee enough luggage space; check the vehicle group and bag capacity.
Verify documents with both destination and supplier
Check minimum age, license holding period, original documents and any translation or international driving permit requirement. Rules vary by jurisdiction and rental company. Confirm additional drivers, child seats and cross-border travel separately.
Read the deposit and protection conditions
Compare rental charges, taxes, mileage, fuel policy, pickup or return fees and deposit. Check whether a credit card in the lead driver’s name is required and how much available credit is needed. Platform protection may work through a later reimbursement claim; do not assume it removes the supplier’s deposit or excess.
Make pickup and return workable
Find out whether collection is inside the terminal or requires a shuttle, how late arrivals are handled and whether one-way return is allowed. Inspect the body, tires and fuel level at pickup and keep photos. Confirm fuel, cleaning and key handover rules for return. Your flight arrival time is not necessarily your pickup time.
Your final checklist
- License, age and credit card meet supplier requirements
- Check deposit, excess, coverage and claim process
- Confirm mileage, fuel, cross-border and one-way rules
- Pickup and return details fit the actual journey
